Special Exhibition for this year´s Asia-Pacific Weeks at Computerspielemuseum!

Orochi and the White Wolf – Gaming Classics from Asia

In the context of this year’s Asia-Pacific Weeks the Computerspielemuseum presents a range of playable treasures from Asia. At the special exhibition’s gaming stations - including a large-sized projection - gaming classics from the Asian-Pacific area are presented on cult-consoles such as the Playstation or on a rather historical automat (the NEO-GEO Arcade). Important topics of those games are myths, legends and folklore.

The challenging action- adventure Okami (Capcom 2006, Playstation 2) for instance tells the story of the sun god of Shintoism who liberates the world from the dark demon Orochi. In this game an elaborated design with a high playability meets unique aesthetics. The figures’ cel-shaded hard contours fuse into surrounding elements reminding you of Japanese ink wash paintings (sumi-e) and watercolour paintings.

By contrast, A-Train (Artink-Maxis since 1985, Playstation) guides you to a quite different realm:

All aboard and beware of the platform edge! This business sim by the Japanese developer Artink resembles SimCity as a strategic construction simulation. Nothing less than the construction of an entire railroad empire with its infrastructure and railway system is to manage in this isometric train simulation. King of Monsters (SNK 1991, NEO GEO Arcade) is a brightly coloured reminiscence of famous Asian creatures and the monster films of the 1950s and 60s (kaiju / tokusatsu).Moving through the urban jungle as one of six monstrous creatures you have to hold your ground against another player or against a third one with combined forces.Even without the official licenses of Godzilla or Gamera on board, you’re at food chain’s right end here.

Moreover the genre mix created by five other gaming stations creates a playful atmosphere and serves unexpected insights into a far and playful culture. But especially in the mirror of playing any distance is abolished.
